This is another category that often
falls under ‘out of sight out of mind’….
Growing up on a farm with lots of various livestock; frequent fencing activity was a given. The old adage that good fences make good neighbors is still alive and well. A good fence defines your space, keeps pets at bay and can keep critters out.
There are 2 primary culprits that raised their ugly head when it comes to fences…
1: Wooden Posts rotting below ground &
2: Trees and shrubs that can quickly grow into a fence. (this area falls into our annual preventive checkup reminder via our blog) …. An ounce of prevention!!!!
Addressing the post issue; here’s the deal… posts rot out due to aerobic bacteria activity. A Post will weaken and ultimately break due to this activity. Often this takes place in the top 6 inches of soil… If you’re needing to replacing a broken post, you’ll want to check out that posting…. No pun intended!!
Plumb & straight is a critical guideline for good fencing…. although some terrain can add challenges to that formula.
Refurbishing an old fence or adding a new one is very doable for most home project folks.
Here’s a story…With no trees and a busier road, I wanted some privacy on our 100-year-old farm-place… so I decided to add a fence using some materials from an old barn I had torn down…. Between using solid but untreated barn materials for posts & unknowingly not getting the proper clearance from the local authorities…
… Let’s just say ‘that fence project’ is one that did not end well & is one I would just as soon forget!!!!! Where was YouTube when I needed it????
