I live in a part of the country that knows what REAL winter is about. The beauty of a -20 degree Fahrenheit day with 20 MPH winds is
Granted this is a much bigger deal in some areas of the country than others! For some folks it’s cold, for some it’s unbearable heat… and for some it’s about keeping out little critters!!
Technology and materials have changed a lot in this area, and as is par there are high- and low-end replacement options. There are also ways to fully refurbish old originals; but to be fair that may truly be classified as a labor of love, as it can be very tedious and time consuming…. It would fall on the higher end of our ‘difficulty rating’…. If you do tackle these projects, you have my blessing… and may patience be with you!!!
Windows and doors are ‘higher ticket items’ so the decision to repair or replace can be a tougher one. As always, both are doable… There are several things you can do to ‘buy you some time’.
I do have a beef with those that choose to replace and then choose cheap low-quality options! If you’re going to go through the work… use good quality replacements…. Do it right and you won’t regret it!!
This is also an area plagued by ‘less than honorable shysters’ that do far less than high quality work! Their focus is to make a quick buck and get out. The ‘less aware homeowner’ will often be clueless until further down the road there are issues…
If you are considering having a crew do window or door replacements…. Take the time & do the legwork to thoroughly check on their track record.
After purchasing hour 100-year-old farmhouse; the first winter made it very obvious that something needed to be done with many of the windows! With funds tight I had several inside storms made at a glass store. They were very affordable, simple to mount & that third layer proved to be a fix that bought some time while keeping those areas comfy and cozy.
Replacing doors or windows are both manageable projects. (though they are on the higher end of our difficulty scale)
