Our 100-year-old farmhouse at one time had a wood heat chimney. Having access to ample wood, along with lots of young energy, I was determined to reinstall a 2-story unit…. That’s when fuel prices were doing nothing but going up.
Inch by inch I got it done, right up through the center of the house.
The challenging part was covering all the inside areas with field stone. That was truly a labor of love. But it did turn out pretty nice & combined with an incredibly efficient Vermont castings stove provided a fantastic heat sink that easily kept our home warm on the coldest of nights.
Chimneys can be great; have yours inspected if need be, keep it clean, keep the critter covering in good shape, and you should be able to enjoy many cozy evenings snuggled up enjoying the glowing embers!!… or ‘pretend embers’ if you convert it to gas L
